Goal Setting

Goal setting. Everyone knows what a goal is but most find it difficult to reach their goals. There are many reasons for that to happen; some of which are due to lack of focus or setting unrealistic goals, and then getting frustrated by the lack of success reaching that goal.

In order to reach your goal, it is extremely important to have specific strategies to reach that goal. They say if you fail to plan, you are just planning to fail. This applies to goal setting too.

The following techniques will help you reach your goals:

  • Write Down Your Goals

Think on paper. Write down your goals and put it in a place within easy reach. Every time you feel like you are losing focus, take out what you have written and read out your goals loudly. This will realign your actions towards your goal. Don’t let your actions deviate from the path towards your goals.

  • Share Your Goals

Let those close to you know about your goals. This will give you the extra push and motivation to keep you on the correct path towards reaching your goals. When your loved ones or close friends, whom you share your goals with, ask about where you are in terms of reaching your goals, it will keep you on your toes because you know someone is “watching you” and you do not want to fail. Some will motivate you while others may be negative about what you are trying to achieve. Stay away from the negative people or you will find yourself giving up on your goals.

  • Plan Actions From Your Goals

Work backwards. Start from your goal. Then list down all actions you will need to take in order to reach your goals. Your action must be specific and every time you complete an action, put a tick next to your actions list. This will give you a sense of achievement and strengthen the believe that you are moving towards your goals.

  • Balance Your Goals

You will have more than one goal at a time and that is normal. You may have financial goals, personal development goals and others. You do not have to choose one over another. Balance your goals and make an action plan for all your goals individually.

  • Never Give Up

Be realistic. There will be times when you feel that you are not moving towards your goals. Pause, and look at your goals again. Are you setting unrealistic goals for yourself? Or maybe your action plans are not specific enough. Take baby steps and break down your plans into small chunks. If required, change your action plans if you believe it is not helping you move towards your goals. Most importantly, never give up ! Only those that abandon their goals will not achieve them.
